Laptops for Learners Built In Accessibility Features
HP x360 Convertible Laptop
- During set up, some general accessibility features can be accessed by selecting the icon of a person on the bottom of the screen, next to the volume icon. The following features can be activated through a toggle screen to use with set up:
- Magnifier (enlarge things on screen)
- Contrast themes (color contrast on screen)
- Narrator (reads from screen)
- Voice access (needs to be downloaded, allows user to speak commands) – it is recommended to have headset microphone for quality recognition.
- On screen keyboard (brings up keyboard)
- Sticky keys (select one key at a time instead of all at once: i.e. CTRL+ALT+DELETE can be pressed separately to lock screen vs. simultaneously)
- Filter keys (set keyboard sensitivity to ignore brief/repeated keystrokes)
- Once logged in, additional accessibility features can be set up from the settings menu:
- Vision
- Text can be enlarged.
- Visual effects: Scroll bar visibility, window background transparency and animation effects can be customized.
- Mouse pointer: style/size/color customization options. Can activate touchscreen to have a circle appear where screen was touched.
- Text cursor indicator can be activated and customized to a specific color/size/thickness.
- Magnifier and zoom to enlarge entire screen.
- Color filters to make colors easier to see/differentiate.
- Contrast themes to make everything easier to see/differentiate/reduce light sensitivity.
- Narrator is the built-in screen reader. Options to customize the voice, verbosity, and other features. Works with braille displays that use USB/serial port.
- Hearing
- Option to set up mono audio and select to flash the screen, window, or title bar during audio notifications.
- Live captions can be turned on and customized by color/size.
- Interaction
- Voice Access to command screen navigation and typing by voice.
- Keyboard access: sticky keys, filter keys, and toggle keys (sensitivity/sound), on screen keyboard
- Numeric keyboard as mouse pointer (N/A without external keyboard)
- Eye Control (N/A without external eye tracker device)
- Keyboard shortcuts:
- Temporary magnification: Press windows logo key + the Plus sign. Press windows Key + Esc to turn it off.
- Color filters: Press windows logo key + Ctrl + C to turn filters on or off.
- Narrator: Press windows logo key + Ctrl + Enter to turn narrator on or off.
- To customize narrator: Press windows logo key + Ctrl + N
- Sticky keys: Press shift key 5x to turn on and off.
- Live captions: Press windows logo key + Ctrl + L to turn captions on
- Speech recognition: Press windows logo key + Ctrl + S to turn speech recognition on
- Voice typing: Press windows logo key + H to turn on speech to text dictation
- On screen keyboard: Press windows logo key + Ctrl + O to turn on and off
