Canvas: Connect Your Course to Microsoft Teams

Overview

Cedar Crest College instructors can use Microsoft Teams to support course communication, online meetings, and collaboration.

When enabled by the College, Canvas can synchronize course enrollment information with Microsoft Teams, helping instructors maintain a Team associated with their Canvas course.

This guide explains how to:

  • Enable Microsoft Sync for a Canvas course.
  • Synchronize course enrollment information.
  • Access your course Team.
  • Troubleshoot common sign-in, synchronization, and access problems.

Important: The Microsoft Teams integration must be enabled by Cedar Crest College. Some options described below may not appear in every course.

1. Enable Microsoft Sync in Canvas

Microsoft Sync connects Canvas course enrollment information with Microsoft Teams.

Instructions

  1. Sign in to Cedar Crest College Canvas.
  2. Open the course you want to connect to Microsoft Teams.
  3. Select Settings from the Course Navigation menu.
  4. Select the Integrations tab.
  5. Locate Microsoft Sync.
  6. Turn the Microsoft Sync setting On.
  7. Expand the Microsoft Sync section to view additional options.
  8. Select Sync Now to initiate the first synchronization.

Canvas will begin processing the synchronization request.

You can expand the Microsoft Sync section to review the synchronization status, last synchronization date, and any reported errors.

Note: If Microsoft Sync is not displayed, the integration may not be enabled for your course or institution. Contact IT Support for assistance.

2. Synchronize Course Enrollment

After Microsoft Sync is enabled, changes to Canvas course enrollments can trigger updates to the associated Microsoft Team.

Examples include:

  • Students being added to the course.
  • Students being removed from the course.
  • Changes to eligible course instructor enrollments.

Manually Synchronize Your Course

If you need to initiate a synchronization:

  1. Open the Canvas course.
  2. Select Settings > Integrations.
  3. Expand Microsoft Sync.
  4. Select Sync Now.
  5. Review the synchronization status.

Enrollment changes may take several minutes to appear in Teams. Instructure indicates that enrollment changes may take up to approximately 10 minutes to synchronize under normal conditions.

Important: Course synchronization requires matching Canvas and Microsoft 365 identities. At least one eligible Canvas instructor, teaching assistant, or designer must correspond to an owner in the associated Microsoft Team.

3. Access Your Course in Microsoft Teams

Once synchronization has completed, open Microsoft Teams to locate your course Team.

  1. Open Microsoft Teams.
  2. Sign in using your Cedar Crest College Microsoft 365 account.
  3. Open the Teams section.
  4. Locate the Team associated with your Canvas course.
  5. Select the Team to access its available channels, conversations, and collaboration tools.

If the Team is not immediately visible, check your Teams list and any available hidden or archived Teams views.

Activate Your Class Team

Depending on how the Team was created, instructors may need to activate it before students can access it.

If Teams displays an activation option, review the Team and activate it when you are ready for students to participate.

4. Access Microsoft Teams from Canvas

If Cedar Crest College has deployed the current Microsoft 365 LTI integration, you may be able to access Teams directly from your Canvas course.

  1. Open your Canvas course.
  2. Look for Microsoft Education, Microsoft 365, or another institution-configured Microsoft integration link in Course Navigation.
  3. Select the integration.
  4. Sign in using your Cedar Crest College Microsoft 365 account if prompted.
  5. Select the available Teams feature.
  6. Open the Team associated with your course.

The available features depend on the College's Microsoft 365 LTI configuration.

Important: Older Canvas course navigation links labeled Microsoft Teams may use retired Microsoft integrations. If an older link no longer works, use Microsoft Teams directly or contact IT Support.

5. Troubleshooting Microsoft Teams and Canvas

Microsoft Sync Is Missing

If you do not see Microsoft Sync under Settings > Integrations:

  • Confirm that you are accessing the correct Canvas course.
  • Verify that you have the appropriate instructor permissions.
  • Contact IT Support to determine whether the integration is enabled.

Microsoft Sync Displays an Error

A synchronization error may occur when Canvas cannot match a course instructor with a Microsoft 365 account or Team owner.

Try the following:

  1. Open Microsoft Teams.
  2. Confirm that you are signed in using your Cedar Crest College account.
  3. Sign out if you are using another Microsoft account.
  4. Sign in again with your College account.
  5. Return to Canvas.
  6. Open Settings > Integrations > Microsoft Sync.
  7. Select Sync Now.

If the error continues, submit an IT Support Request.

IT Support may need to verify the Microsoft 365 account mapping, course enrollment, or Team ownership.

Error Accessing Microsoft Teams from Canvas

If selecting Microsoft Teams within Canvas displays an error or a blank page:

  1. Confirm that you are signed in to Microsoft 365 with your Cedar Crest College account.
  2. Open Microsoft Teams directly at https://teams.microsoft.com.
  3. Check whether the course Team is accessible outside Canvas.
  4. Try a supported browser such as Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome.
  5. Check whether your browser is blocking pop-ups or cookies required for Microsoft authentication.
  6. If the Canvas link still fails, contact IT Support.

Note: If Teams works directly but not through Canvas, the issue may be related to the Canvas integration rather than your Microsoft 365 account.

My Course Team Is Missing

If you cannot locate your Team:

  1. Verify that Microsoft Sync is enabled.
  2. Review the most recent synchronization status.
  3. Run Sync Now, if available.
  4. Confirm that you are signed in to the correct Microsoft 365 account.
  5. Check your Teams list for the course Team.

If the Team remains missing, contact IT Support.

Students Cannot Access the Team

If students report that they cannot access the course Team:

  • Confirm that the students appear in the Canvas course roster.
  • Check the Microsoft Sync status.
  • Allow time for enrollment synchronization.
  • Verify that the Team has been activated, if activation is required.
  • Ask students to sign in using their Cedar Crest College Microsoft 365 accounts.

If the problem continues, IT Support may need to review Team membership and synchronization errors.

Microsoft Teams Link No Longer Works

Microsoft retired its legacy Teams Classes and Teams Meetings LTI applications in September 2025.

If your course contains an older Microsoft Teams navigation link, it may no longer function.

Use Microsoft Teams directly while IT Support determines whether the course should use the current Microsoft 365 LTI integration.

Do not repeatedly enable different Teams creation or synchronization methods, as this may result in duplicate course Teams.

6. Additional Resources

Need Additional Assistance?

If you experience problems connecting Canvas to Microsoft Teams or synchronizing course enrollments, submit an IT Support Request.

Include:

  • Your Canvas course name and course URL.
  • The semester or term.
  • A description of the issue.
  • Any synchronization error messages.
  • Screenshots, if available.
  • Whether you can access Microsoft Teams directly outside Canvas.

This information will help IT Support determine whether the problem is related to Canvas, Microsoft 365 authentication, course enrollment synchronization, or the Teams integration.
