Install Fonts in Windows 11

Tags font

Overview

Windows 11 includes a collection of fonts used by Microsoft Office and other applications. Occasionally, you may need to install additional fonts to display documents correctly or use specific fonts required for College communications.

Common reasons include:

  • Opening older Word documents that use fonts not included with Windows 11.
  • Installing approved Cedar Crest College fonts.
  • Using fonts provided for a class, department, or project.

College-managed computers may already have required fonts installed automatically.

Check Whether a Font Is Installed

  1. Click Start and open Settings.
  2. Select Personalization > Fonts.
  3. Use the search box to look for the font name.
  4. If the font appears, it is already installed.

Install a Font Manually

  1. Download the font from an approved or trusted source.
  2. If the font is in a ZIP file, right-click the file and select Extract All.
  3. Open the extracted folder.
  4. Locate the font file, usually ending in .ttf or .otf.
  5. Right-click the font file and select Install.
Alternatively, select Install for all users if the option is available and you have the necessary permissions.
  6. Close and reopen Word or the application where you want to use the font.

You can verify the installation under Settings > Personalization > Fonts.

Supplemental Fonts for Older Documents

Some documents created in older versions of Windows or Microsoft Office may use fonts that are not installed on your computer.

If text appears differently than expected, or the document layout changes:

  1. Open the document and identify the font it uses.
  2. Check whether the font is installed in Windows.
  3. If the font is missing, obtain it from an approved source.
  4. Install the font using the directions above.
  5. Close and reopen the document.

Some optional fonts are available through Windows language features, but others require separate licensed font files.

Note: Installing a missing font may improve document formatting, but it cannot guarantee an exact match if the document was created using older software.

Cedar Crest College Fonts

Cedar Crest College uses designated fonts for official communications.

If an approved College font is missing from your managed computer, do not download an unofficial replacement. Request assistance so the correct font and licensing can be verified.
