Microsoft Teams: Breakout Rooms Systems Specifications for Organizers and Attendees

Overview

Microsoft Teams is an easy way to pull together a group to share, collaborate and communicate in one central location without the use of phone calls that take time away from our day or emails that can easily get buried.  From directly within Teams we can bring everyone together to share information, securely edit files live and at the same time, bring together Microsoft Office 365 apps (OneDrive, OneNote, Planner, Forms, etc) and third-party apps and websites in one place, tag members of the team in conversations or actions and customize the work through adding notes (OneNote and others) and other applications.

This article will detail the system specifications for organizers and attendees.

Both Organizer and Participant devices must meet these requirements

Meeting Organizers with devices that do not meet these requirements may not see the option to start a breakout room. Likewise, participants with devices that do not meet the requirements may have issues being assigned to breakout rooms.

For access to Breakout Rooms and some other Microsoft 365 and Teams features, please ensure your device meets the following requirements

  1. Updated and supported Operating System (OS)
    1. Apple only officially supports the three most recent versions of macOS. Please ensure you are running macOS 13 Ventura, 14 Sonoma, or 15 Sequoia.
    2. Windows users should ensure they are running Windows 10 or Windows 11 and are fully updated.
    3. Android and iOS users can be placed into Breakout Rooms but cannot create or manage Breakout Rooms. Please ensure your device is fully updated.
  2. Updated Teams Desktop Client

Cannot check manually: Client updates are periodically pushed to your device. Modern versions of Teams do not allow manual checks for updates.
